John Heweliusz

             Johannes Hevelius was born January 28, 1611 year in Gdansk brewing family. In accordance with the will of his father he studied law, it does not blunted boyish curiosity and passion for understanding the world. His curiosity ran out far on the ground and reached the limits of the cosmos. As a young man traveled to Holland, England, here he met scholars - who founded the still existing Royal Society. Then visited France. This journey has allowed him even more to broaden their knowledge of mechanics and optics, enriched with knowledge of French and English. He established a personal scientific contacts, which then not only maintained but expanded. After his return to Gdansk Hevelius made at the request of his father's studio and the rights of municipal facilities. In 1635 he married Catherine Rebeschke, daughter of a wealthy brewer. She brought a dowry of two houses, along with the brewery in the old town street Korzenna 53 and 54 located adjacent to the house at number 55 and his father's brewery. Settling on the street Korzenna Hevelius permanently tied to the Old Town. His civic activities began modestly as a member of the parish of St.. Catherine. At the beginning of astronomical activity has become essential for creating a workshop Hevelius scientific work, and so stocked with appropriate equipment on the roof of the observatory was built three houses. His ingenuity knew no bounds, enriched with knowledge and logical thinking fruitful new research tools. Building measuring instruments, the largest telescope was 39 meters long. His major achievement was to build the most accurate pendulum clock. Hevelius was an important figure in the contemporary world of science and politics.
